The Role
As a Technical Design Manager, you will be responsible for leading and overseeing the daily operations of the Design team to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality, accurate technical designs that meet both customer and internal business needs. You will drive design excellence, ensure workflow efficiency, promote continuous improvement, and serve as the primary link between the design department and other operational teams. This role demands strong technical expertise in SolidWorks, manufacturing principles, and hands-on leadership in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment.

01 Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the daily activities and workload distribution of the Technical Design Office, ensuring that all deliverables are completed on time and to specification.
- Use TSD scheduling tools to proactively manage capacity planning, prioritizing projects based on business needs and customer deadlines.
- Monitor drawing output, revision cycles, and error frequency; provide detailed weekly and monthly reporting on team performance and project metrics.
- Ensure timely release and distribution of manufacturing drawings to production, contracts, and data departments.

02 Knowledge
- Oversee and contribute to the production of detailed CAD drawings, including sheet metal, welded assemblies, and bespoke joinery components, ensuring designs are manufacturable and value engineered.
- Lead the team in the use of SolidWorks for 2D/3D modelling, assemblies, and renderings, maintaining design accuracy and best practices throughout the design process.
- Develop and maintain a robust CAD standards manual and ensure consistent application across the team.
- Produce high-quality 3D renderings and visuals for client approvals where required.
- Support the creation and maintenance of part numbers, BOMs, and routings within the ERP system.
- Work closely with IT/CAD vendors to ensure optimal CAD system performance and resolve technical issues as needed.
- Manage, mentor, and develop a team of draughtsmen and design engineers, fostering a collaborative, innovative, and accountable culture.
- Maintain and regularly update a skills matrix to identify training needs, avoid single points of failure, and ensure full team capability coverage.
- Lead performance management processes, including 1:1s, appraisals, and performance improvement planning where necessary
- Investigate and resolve quality issues stemming from design, implementing corrective actions and drawing revisions as needed.
- Liaise with the Quality, Production, and Supply Chain departments to address and prevent internal non-conformances and site complaints.
- Drive a continuous improvement mindset within the design team, identifying opportunities to enhance design efficiency, accuracy, and manufacturability.
- Act as the primary liaison between the Design team and other internal departments, including Estimating, Production, Contracts, and Supply Chain.
- Attend internal meetings and client briefings to gather comprehensive design requirements and support technical decision-making.
- Conduct site visits and surveys where necessary to support accurate and practical design development.
